The Top 5 Reasons Why Second Marriages Fail – part 1

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Do you REALLY know what you’re in for when you enter a second marriage? Most people don’t. Common sense might tell us that second marriages have a higher success rate because we’ve made our mistakes and moved on.but unfortunately, this is just not the case.
You’re about to discover the top 5 reasons why second marriages fail. Take this opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes to make certain your second marriage is the best one yet.

1. PART 1: Let the Tug of War Begin (Please substitute male/female where appropriate.)

The competition begins when a woman enters her second marriage, but her new husband is confused about his role in the marriage in relation to her children. He wants his new wife to make HIM the priority and the children want their mom to make THEM the priority.

This “tug of war” creates contempt and resentment leaving the woman in the middle feeling like she has to “choose a side”. This is one of the biggest factors that puts strain on a second marriage. But the sad fact is; this is only HALF the battle in the “tug of war” that leads to a second divorce.

The Top 5 Reasons Why
Second Marriages Fail

Common sense might tell us that second marriages have a higher success rate because we’ve learned from the mistakes in our first marriage.

Unfortunately, this just isn’t true.

Based on the facts I’ve gathered while working with couples for over 11 years, I’ve compiled a list of the top 5 reasons why second marriages fail. Take this opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes to make this marriage the best one yet.

This “tug of war” creates contempt and resentment leaving the woman in the middle feeling like she has to “choose a side”. It’s also one of the main reasons that the second marriage divorce rate is higher than that of first marriages.

Down-to-earth wisdom for the second time around.

Down-to-earth wisdom for the second time around.

In a perfect world, men and women would marry, live long and happy lives together and leave this world at about the same time. There would be no need for second marriages. But we live in a world that is far from perfect. People sometimes die young, leaving behind grieving spouses with potentially long lives ahead of them. And too many marriages simply do not last and collapse into divorce.

Having served as a congregational rabbi for the past 38 years, I have seen it all: second marriages that thrive; second marriages that are doomed from the start; second marriages wrecked by children; second marriages in which the children from both sides fuse together into a happy and cooperative unit; second marriages that collapse under financial strain and second marriages that endure, but unhappily.

The Second Marriage Divorce Rate: Is It Possible to Beat the Odds And Make Your Second Marriage a Success?

Built by Larry Bilotta on Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

It’s been proven that the second marriage divorce rate is statistically higher than that of first marriages because of a few simple, yet critical mistakes that many people make when they enter their second marriage.

Psychology Today stated that a whopping 60% of remarriages fail. And they do so even more quickly; after an average of 10 years, 37% of remarriages have dissolved versus 30% of first marriages.

If anything can be learned from this, it is the fact that you need to enter a second marriage with CAUTION. Here are some tips that will help you make sure that your second marriage is a success…

A new 2007 report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that in 2004 (the year of the study)

  • 12 percent of men and 13 percent of women had married twice
  • 3 percent each had married three or more times
  • 58 percent of women and 54 percent of men 15 and older had married only once

Below we have converted the statistics to graphs to make the data easier to understand.  See the last page of the article if you would like to use any tables or graphs.

Summary of Statistics on Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage after Divorce

A new report from the U.S. census bureau shows that

  • First marriages lasted about 8 years on average.
  • Most people seem to have waited about three and half years between their first and second marriages.
  • For those 25 and older, 52 percent of men and 44 percent of women were remarried.

In examining longer lasting marriages, the report found that just over half of currently married women in 2004 had been married for at least 15 years, and 6 percent had been married at least 50 years.

As you can see, a slight majority of men have remarried after divorce and the next largest group are currently divorced.

Current Marital Status (2004) for Women

Less women seem to remarry after divorce than men and a larger number of women are widowed. This may in part reflect the longer life span of women.
